Backupper fails to start after upgrading

I just upgraded to the latest version (7.3.1.0) and now Backupper doesn't start successfully. It displays the splash screen ("Loading, please wait") and then disappears. The main UI never appears. Things I checked:

* My OS is full patched. I'm running Windows 11.
* Rebooting the machine makes no difference.
* Task Manager shows that "AOMEI Backupper Schedule task service" is running, but shows no other processes with AOMEI in the name.

The Event Viewer application log shows this error:

Faulting application name: Backupper.exe, version: 7.3.1.0, time stamp: 0x64cccc23
Faulting module name: MSVCR80.dll, version: 8.0.50727.9680, time stamp: 0x6090c909
Exception code: 0xc000000d
Fault offset: 0x00008aa0

  • I thought I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling. The uninstall seemed to go fine. (I opted to leave the license info intact.) After rebooting the machine I initiated the install program, which then aborted saying it detected that a restart for uninstall was still pending. I rebooted the machine again and tried to run the installer again and got the same message. So now  can't re-install Backupper.

Vindalf, could you please reply if you are using BackUpper (BU) free, Pro, or other version?
I experienced this same issue once with the Pro version. I fixed by uninstalling > restart > install with free version, then registering again.
If this does not work, you could uninstall > restart > create new Windows user > install free version > register.
Please go to Windows Updates > Optional Updates > Install all. Before doing this step, please backup all important files on your PC, out of caution. You could also use your BU WinPE USB stick to do entire PC.
    Backupper WinPE USB:
Add custom drivers, such as NVMe, if necessary. Does not work with some monitors.

    Partition Assistant WinPE USB:
Add custom drivers, such as NVMe, if necessary.

Aomei WinPE Builder 2.0 USB, includes: Partition Assistant, Backupper, Recuva, OSF Mount, CPU-Z, Bootice. Does not support any additional drivers, such as some internal NVMe disks.

  • I do have a license, so it's not the free version. When I downloaded the upgrade, the installer I got was for the free version ("ABProTrial.exe.") I think that means what I did is exactly what you suggest: uninstalled and then restarted with a free (trial) version expecting to re-register. Or is the free version different from the ProTrial version?

And as I said, my OS is already fully updated.

  • Standard/Free, Trial, and Pro .exe installation files are all slightly different. If the free version is not working for you, please uninstall > restart > install Pro version.

    Pro version "Setup Edition"

  • Got it.

At this point, as I said, I can't begin with Uninstall. I have already uninstalled. So following your instructions I'll try to reinstall with each version. Results:

    * Trial version: "Setup had detected a restart required to perform the uninstall."
    * Free version: "Setup had detected a restart required to perform the uninstall."
    * Pro version: I don't see this as a separate download on the website. To get Pro I assume you are meant to download Trial and register.

(And to recap: rebooting does not make the "restart required" error go away.)

  • Ah ha! I followed your other suggestion and logged in as a different user. From there I was able to complete the installation. I seem to be up and running. Thank you for the help.
