“C drive is too small to run fast, and I want to split some free space from other partition to C drive. Should I deframent or check and fix partition before extending partition? If I should, first to defragment? Or check and fix partition?” This problem is asked by some users when they use AOMEI Partition Assistant or other partition software. Now, this article will introduce some knowledge about defragment or check and fix partition.

What is defragment?

Disk fragment, should be called file fragment, which is caused by that file is stored into different locations separately in whole disk, instead of stored into cluster continuously. Files that is written in disk discontinuously will cause file fragment, which will increase the time to search file, and affect the system performance. A simple example: If you are seeing a film that is being downloaded, which is easy to generate file fragment. Because file is not written into your disk continuously, and watching and downloading at the same time require disk to run faster. This behavior is harmful to hard disk. I’m sure that most people have done this.

How to defragment?

Windows 10 is taken as an example:

Step 1. There is a control panel in Windows computer. After enter control panel, please choose “System and Security”. As the picture below shows, under the option “Administrative Tool”, you can see “Defragment your hard drive”, and choose it.

If you want to move free space from D drive to C: drive, you’d better defragment D: drive and C: drive. It can improve the running speed of AOMEI Partition Assistant, also, can reduce the mistakes to make operation finish successfully.

How to check and fix partition?

If there are bad sectors in disk, running speed of computer will be affected. Because data and files can’t be read, or system running speed will become slower. What’s more, hard disk will make “Cara, Cara” noise. The best solution is to utilize tool or software to check partition and fix bad sectors. There are two tools :

  • To use command line to check and fix partition.

Step 1. Press Windows key plus “R” to launch Run software, and then, input “CMD“.

If you want to check other partition, such as D: drive. Please change “C:” into “D:”.

  • To use AOMEI Partition Assistant to check and fix partition.

Launch AOMEI Partition Assistant. Right-click in C drive, and then choose “Advanced” option. Finally choose “Check Partition”. As the below picture shows.

Should I defragment disk or check and fix partition before extending partition?

The purpose of defragmengt disk or check and fix partition is to improve the running speed of hard disk, and reduce the waiting time while extending partition. Before extending partition, you can defragment disk or check and fix partition, they can avoid the mistakes while extending partition, and the data will be more safe when they are moved. Due to the fact that AOMEI Partition Assistant is a partition software that you can use it to manage partition and hard disk without formatting data, it will be good for your data safety to defragment disk or check and fix partition.

Besides extending partition, there are resize partition, split partition, merge partition and so forth. They are involved with moving data. When you use those functions, you’d better defragment disk or check and fix partition. Some people may ask if there is order to operate two functions. In fact, there is no limitation or particular order. It doesn’t matter which function is first to operate.
