Safest storage brand and hardware?

Hello 2 of my HDDs of the same brand and of the same capacity and almost of the same year failed of the exact same way. I really think they fail on purpose or at least that they are made with poor quality on purpose to save cost because I have a third one of the same brand but with smaller capacity that is still rocking today like dayone even if it is twice older than the other that failed.

So I look for new storage for 8 to 16 Tb or files. (movies, games, etc)

What are the safest brands? Are smaller HDDs less tends to fail?
Are SD cards worth a try? If I buy a card reader with a lot of card ports I should be able to get more or less the desired overall capacity with less fail risk because of more small storage?

Also both of my HDDs failed short after I passed from windows 8.1 to W10. I think this OS is probably not inocent in the failure of the drives since the failure occur in the process of shuting down the computer (longer time to shut down with weird loading and surprise disk is dead on startup).
Should I make avoiding this OS a priority?

Thanks.
