Microsoft has confirmed on social media that Windows 11 will affect the speed of storage drives (NVMe, SSD, HDD), but fortunately not everyone will be affected.
Some users have found that, unlike the Windows 10 update in November 2021, various PC memory speeds on Windows 11 have some problems. For example, the random write speed is only half of normal. Not only has the system and application startup speed slowed down, but some people have also noticed that their hard disk read and write speeds have also slowed down.
In addition, there is a bug that may slow down the read and write speed of drives running Windows 11.
In most cases, the difference between Windows 11 and Windows 10 is not too obvious, but when the system driver is used to install large applications or transfer files, you may encounter some weird performance issues.
In some cases, the writing speed of Windows 11 drives can be reduced by 45%, so some Windows 11 computers cannot load applications or open folders immediately.
This question is recorded in detail in the feedback center, Twitter, Reddit, and Microsoft's answer forum. According to people familiar with the matter, Microsoft is actively investigating the problem and has already fixed it through Windows Update. But the patch is currently an optional update.
Microsoft fixes performance issues in Windows 11
In a previously released support document, Microsoft also acknowledged this issue that was first discovered in August and has begun testing the patch as part of the optional update to the operating system (KB5007262).
I learned that Microsoft officially confirmed in a statement that the bug will affect the performance of all hard drives. This happens when Windows 11 performs unnecessary operations in response to write operations, but this issue does not impact all partitions or drives.
It is said that when the feature named "NTFS USN log" is enabled, Windows 11 will have performance issues, but in Win11, it is only enabled on the C drive by default, and the rest of the partitions or drives are not affected.
Judging from the number of reports, this bug is not universal. It may be caused by the cache usage of the new operating system.
Ordinary users may see the fix in Patch Tuesday (security update) next week, which will be released on December 14. If you feel that your device is slower than before, it is recommended to install the previously released optional update (KB5007262) now.
